Criminal Court Cases in Salem County
New Jersey divides criminal work by offense class. The Salem Superior Court Criminal Division hears adult first- through fourth-degree indictable crimes, municipal appeals, Pretrial Intervention matters, and post-conviction applications. Its public counter is at 92 Market Street in Salem. Municipal courts keep disorderly-persons, petty-disorderly-persons, ordinance, and motor-vehicle complaints. The Carneys Point-Pennsville Joint Municipal Court serves those two towns and has also handled Penns Grove operations since May 12, 2025. Pittsgrove matters go to Cumberland Salem Regional Municipal Court in Bridgeton. This split is why one Salem County defendant name can yield a municipal complaint but no Superior Court case. The Salem County Prosecutor may dismiss, divert, downgrade, or present an indictable charge. The court that receives that charging choice becomes custodian of the filed case record.
The Salem County Sheriff's Office and Salem County Correctional Facility may hold service, transport, or custody records, yet neither replaces the clerk's docket. For the plea, judgment, or sentence, use the court file.

- Choose the court layer first. Use municipal search for a local complaint and the criminal case or judgment route for a Superior Court matter.
- Search the defendant name with Salem selected as the county. Check exact spelling and known aliases before treating a blank result as final.
- Use the complaint, indictment, accusation, or SBI number when available. An exact identifier helps separate similar names.
- Read the charge status, events, plea, and disposition as distinct fields. A filed allegation is not proof of conviction.

Older Salem County Criminal Cases
A missing online result does not settle whether a Salem County court case exists. Records from before the electronic coverage period, files with spelling changes, and matters that were transferred or downgraded may require staff help. Call the Criminal Division, provide an approximate year and all known case identifiers, and ask whether the file remains onsite or has moved to the Superior Court Records Center.
Judiciary records are requested under Court Rule 1:38, not through the Salem County OPRA custodian. OPRA is the route for eligible county executive records, such as a record made by Corrections or another county office. It does not make the county clerk the custodian of a court file. That line matters when a searcher wants a filed judgment rather than the arresting agency's narrative.
Ask for the document by name. A docket entry may prove that an order was filed, but it may not show the order's full text. The Judiciary's Electronic Access Program, or EAP, supports docket, judgment, and party-name inquiry at $4 per minute, yet it does not supply document images. A certified judgment or disposition is a different product from either an EAP view or a public portal printout.
What a Criminal Case File Contains
A Salem County criminal case file centers on the filed charge and what the court did with it. Decode Salem County Charging Records
New Jersey terms can make a Salem County case look less clear than it is. A complaint starts the charge. An indictment is a grand jury's formal charge. Read the degree and disposition together. A first- through fourth-degree label describes an indictable allegation. Only the later plea, verdict, dismissal, or diversion result tells what happened to it.
Criminal Case Stages in Salem County
A typical Salem County case begins with an arrest or complaint and an early court appearance. The prosecutor then screens the allegation. Some charges are dismissed, diverted, or downgraded. Others proceed through a grand jury or, where allowed, an accusation. Arraignment addresses the filed charge and plea. Motions and pretrial work follow before a plea or trial produces a disposition. Salem County Recovery Court Records
Recovery Court creates a local record trail for eligible nonviolent drug-related Salem County cases. The program combines intensive probation, phased treatment, drug testing, and frequent judicial review. Salem sessions use courtroom 204. The tri-county program began in 2002, and the Judiciary reported more than 3,000 participants and 964 graduates across the vicinage by April 2024.

That distinction protects both accuracy and privacy. The court record can state the legal result without exposing confidential clinical detail.
Federal Cases Outside Salem County Courts
A federal charge tied to Salem County does not appear in the county's Superior Court docket. Federal cases route through the Camden vicinage of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. Access Rules for Case Records
New Jersey Court Rule 1:38 presumes access to eligible Judiciary records while excluding confidential files and protected personal identifiers. Juvenile matters, sealed or expunged records, victim-sensitive data, and some reports or exhibits may be withheld or redacted. An online view can also show less than the file available through a proper court request.
If a Salem County record cannot be found, check spelling, aliases, case type, court level, and filing year. Then contact the clerk. Do not assume a blank screen means no case. A municipal complaint may never become an indictable Superior Court case because it was dismissed, downgraded, or diverted. An older record may be archived. An expunged file is isolated from ordinary public access.
The New Jersey State Police State Bureau of Identification holds fingerprint-linked statewide history, but it offers no unrestricted public name search.
